Sujit Choudhry, the Constitutional Voice Worldwide

Choudhry, who is the I. Michael Heyman Professor of Law at the University of California was awarded the 12th Dean of the University of California Berkeley’s School of Law in July 2014, making him the first Indian-American Dean of the school. He was also the Cecelia Goetz Professor of Law at the New York University as well as the University of Toronto’s Scholl Chair.

Professor Choudhry’s research targets a variety of issues on constitutional law and politics, ranging from using constitutional design as a weapon to containing the changeover from fierce conflict to democratic politics that are peaceful. He also researches on the basic methodological questions in the study of comparative constitutional law.

Sujit Choudhry is globally known for influence on comparative constitutional law. He has founded the Center for Constitutional Transition. Several years of traveling around the world to bring sanity to the ethnically divided societies, Choudhry got the idea of building an international knowledge network to help these new constitutional democracies. He realized that there was unreliable research on the implementation of these constitutions, which was an obstacle to his constitutional advice. At one time, Sujit Choudhry spent a year trying to establish a relationship that could have provided considerable resources and a global platform for their work, but unfortunately, it failed. Not giving up, they rebuilt the proposal from step one and came up with a new model that was less costly and even much better.

Sujit’s Background Information

Choudhry was born in 1970in New Delhi, India. He was raised in Canada. This multicultural upbringing was an upper hand to his world view and future career. Also, his educated parents brought him up based on intellectual stimulation. His father worked as a teacher of economics at the University of Toronto, and his mother taught nursing. This inspired Choudhry to pursue an academic path from an early age.

Sujit’s occupation is inclusive of being a lawyer, educator, and author. He attended high school at Mc Gill University and now holds law degrees from Toronto, Harvard, and Oxford. He has a wife with whom they have a son and a daughter.
