Sujit Choudhry, Advancing the Field of Comparative Law

Comparative law is the process of comparing different legal systems or the rules of different systems. It involves the study of legal systems of different nations. In a modern, globalized world it is becoming more necessary and advantageous for nations to be familiar with foreign legal systems and to facilitate legal interactions between countries. The study of comparative international law is often instructive for a country in the process of creating or refining its own legislation.

Sujit Choudhry, a lawyer and professor of law, is an expert in the fields of comparative constitutional law and politics. Sujit Choudhry was born in India but received his education in the west. He has law degrees from the University of Toronto, University of Oxford, and Harvard School of Law. His teaching experience includes periods at New York University, University of Toronto, and University of California, Berkeley, where he served as dean of the law school. He is founder of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, an organization which helps nations design a constitution. The center works with teams of global experts to research and develop tools and solutions for unique political situations. Sujit Choudhry is currently partnering with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance to work on three international research projects to be published in 2017.
